Foot, Ankle, Podiatry

Ankle and foot pain have any number of causes that can literally slow you down. The specialists at Central Indiana Orthopedics work to find the appropriate treatment to get you back on your feet.

Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is most commonly associated with trauma and sports-related injuries, such as a fracture, or an injury to the ligaments of the ankle, such as a sprain. However, agitation and discomfort may also occur due to overuse injuries, which can range from mild joint pain to Achilles tendonitis.

Foot Pain

While high heels are often blamed for foot pain (and sometimes they are at fault, no matter how pretty they are!), foot pain is most often associated with trauma (e.g. fracture), disease (e.g. osteoarthritis), deformities (e.g. bunions) or stress injuries.

For both ankle and foot issues, make an appointment for evaluation if you experience:

  • Sudden intense pain
  • Pain when you’re NOT bearing weight
  • Limited range of motion due to stiffness, weakness or swelling
  • Numbness in the foot
  • Pain in the heel, ball or arch of the foot
  • Inability to perform daily activities without foot pain
  • Change in sensation or color of skin or toenail
  • Swelling or tenderness that persists or worsens after 2-3 days
  • If the afflicted area looks deformed or if you have lost function

A podiatrist, or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), has specialized training to treat disorders of the foot and ankle. Common procedures and treatments include:

  • Fracture care
  • Sports medicine
  • Custom orthotics
  • Heel pain/plantar fasciitis
  • Neuroma/pinched nerve
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Diabetic wound care, limb salvage and amputation
  • Correction of bunions and hammertoes
  • Reconstructive foot and ankle surgery
  • Fungal conditions of the foot
  • Wart removal
