Central Indiana Orthopedics and IU Health Ball Launch Rapid Recovery Program for Joint Replacement Patients

Central Indiana Orthopedics and IU Health Ball Hospital have partnered together to create a program for joint replacement patients to focus on getting them home quickly after surgery. Candidates for the Rapid Recovery Program include healthy, highly motivated individuals who have a good support system.

“Patients in this program will be discharged home either the same day of surgery or the next morning, as discussed with their surgeon”, says Paula Tyler, Orthopedic Service Line Leader at IU Health Ball Hospital. “Discharging home within one day after surgery has been proven to have a safe and positive outcome on your recovery. You heal better in the comfort of your own home.”

Surgery will be performed at IU Health Ball Hospital by an orthopedic joint replacement surgeon from Central Indiana Orthopedics. Prior to surgery, the patient is provided a Total Joint Binder to use as a comprehensive guide to reference before the procedure, during their short stay in the hospital, and while recovering at home. After surgery, the patient will be transferred to the hospital’s orthopedic unit.

During the patient’s hospital stay, they will have one to two physical therapy sessions prior to discharging home. Once the patient is able to independently get up and safely ambulate with an assistive device the patient will be ready to go home.

Upon discharge from the hospital, the patient’s support team begins to play an important role in recovery. The patient will need to arrange transportation from hospital to home and their support system should be available to help the patient out as needed for a few days.

After leaving the hospital, the patient will have access to a 24 hour care line, monitored by Natalie McClintick, Nurse Practitioner at Central Indiana Orthopedics, for questions and concerns during the patient’s recovery.

“I’ve always had a passion for being engaged with my patients, says Natalie. “It’s important to me for them to have that ‘one person’ to contact for any questions or concerns – no matter how minor. I have over 20 years’ experience in orthopedics and my goal is to pass that onto our patients as a resource during their recovery.”

The patient will receive a follow up phone call one day after discharge to check on the patient and his or her recovery.

We are excited to offer this program to our patients and give them the opportunity to heal in the comfort of their own home, providing 24 hour support if/when they need it.
