We always love to share what our physicians are doing outside of the office so you can get to know CIO a little better. Today, we are excited to share recent news about Dr. Herbst and what he was up to on November 3rd. Dr. Herbst and his wife, Kristen, traveled to New York City to run the New York City Marathon with Team World Vision!
The NYC Marathon is the world’s largest marathon with over 53,000 registered runners. It is also one of the most fun (if you love running!) – with 2 million fans lining the streets and cheering for each athlete! The Herbst’s goal (besides FINISHING) was to find 26 sponsors for children living in extreme poverty (one for every mile of the run). They were able to exceed their goal with 28 children sponsored!
This was the first marathon run by both Dr. Herbst and Kristen, neither of whom had a marathon on their bucket list. They were invited to join Team World Vision due to the success of the East Central Indiana Global 6K for Water, which Kristen and a small team organize locally each year. World Vision’s Global 6K for Water is a one-day event where people from all over the world walk or run 6 kilometers in their own communities to bring lasting clean water to children in need.
Maybe you’re not ready for a marathon, but you could do a 6k!
Why a 6K? It’s the average round trip distance women and children in the developing world walk for water — water that is often contaminated with life-threatening diseases.
Over $85,000 has been raised in the last 4 local events by area runners/walkers, providing clean water to over 1800 people. This year, they hope to have 400 participants and raise over $35,000. This money goes towards digging wells and other clean water projects in Africa, Haiti, Honduras and other remote locations. Every person registered brings clean water to a specific child, whose unique picture will be displayed on each race bib!
Every step you take is one they won’t have to.
In 2020, the East Central Global 6K for Water will be held Sunday, May 17, 2020, at 6:00 pm, at the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics, AMA, 5161 E Memorial Dr, Muncie, IN 47302).
