At the end of July 2021, CIO’s Dr. Steven Herbst and five of his friends are doing something incredible, but crazy: swimming across Lake Michigan to raise money for their orthopedic mission trip to Antigua Guatemala in November.
Dr. Keith Berend, orthopedic surgeon and friend of Dr. Herbst, is the organizer of Shore2Shore. “We’re just a group of old dudes, husbands, friends,” Dr. Berend said. “Some of us dads, a couple of us doctors, all of us athletes who want to band together and make a transformative impact on this world.”
What brought the crew together is their shared love of cycling, enjoyment of great food, sipping of good wine, epic adventuring, shared faith commitments and united sense of calling to serve arising from this life-renewing faith. Supported by two boats, a great support crew and cheering and praying friends from afar, the group hopes to accomplish their swim in a six-man relay from Two Rivers, WI, to Ludington, MI, in the ballpark of 30 hours.
Dr. Herbst is looking forward to the upcoming mission trip to perform complex lower extremity reconstructions. “One of my greatest joys comes from serving internationally on the mission field,” Dr. Herbst said. “I have been blessed to have served on 13 mission trips, but due to COVID restrictions, we have been unable to travel for the past two years. Under new leadership and a new non-profit, Faith in Practice, we will be heading to Antigua Guatemala in early November.”
The group of orthopedic surgeons and support staff will be performing surgeries that will enable people to walk who otherwise would not have the opportunity for surgery.
