Get to Know Dr. Thomas Salsbury

Meet Dr. Thomas Salsbury, board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Central Indiana Orthopedics. He specializes in general orthopedics, joint replacement of the hip, knee and shoulder and sports-related injuries. Dr. Salsbury has been at CIO since 2016 and practices out of Fishers, Anderson and Winchester.

Dr. Salsbury completed his undergraduate degree at the United States Air Force Academy and went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to joining CIO, Dr. Salsbury served as an orthopedic surgeon in the United States Air Force.

“I was in the military for about 10 years. I deployed twice to the Middle East and took care of soldiers who would get injured,” Dr. Salsbury said. “I was also deployed to Haiti when the earthquake happened in 2010. I’m currently the Med Group Commander of 181st medical group in Terre Haute, IN.”

Dr. Salsbury first became interested in medicine around the age of 13. “I lost the vision in one of my eyes in a matter of days and was hospitalized,” Dr. Salsbury said. “I had a lot of interaction with doctors, and through that experience I became interested in medicine and how you can help people during a scary time of their lives.” He also enjoys sports and outdoor activities personally, which dovetails nicely with his work and helping people return to their active lifestyles. Given his interest in medicine and love of sports, orthopedics seemed like the perfect fit for him.

Dr. Salsbury understands how pain or injury can become the main focus of a patient’s life, so his goal is to eliminate the pain and fix the problem so patients can once again enjoy family, activities and vacations like they used to. Dr. Salsbury describes himself as straightforward and likes to help his patients understand their treatment options and be an involved participant, not just told what will happen. “I like to empower a patient, not just tell them what’s wrong and how they should fix it,” Dr. Salsbury said. “It’s important to educate them about their condition and discuss treatment options together. This allows patients to make an informed decision about their care and take ownership of that decision.”

When Dr. Salsbury isn’t seeing patients, he’s involved in his church and enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids. You can watch Dr. Salsbury’s interview below or at https://ciocenter.com/physicians/thomas-l-salsbury-md/. To schedule an appointment, call 800-622-6575.
