Innovative Ankle Replacement Technology Designed By Central Indiana Orthopedics Physician

Ankle pain can be triggered by a number of causes such as sports injuries, wear and tear, or trauma, and can keep you from enjoying your favorite activities. Dr. Herbst, Central Indiana Orthopedics foot and ankle surgeon, has a passion for getting patients back on their feet. In 2012, he partnered with musculoskeletal health care company Zimmer to produce an innovative ankle replacement implant, Zimmer Biomet Trabecular Metal™ Total Ankle.

This product was developed after over 10 years of planning and the result is an implant designed to reproduce the ankle’s natural flexibility and motion, complimenting a patient’s natural anatomy. The implant was also designed to be used with a lateral surgical approach in mind, meaning the surgeon makes an incision on the side of the ankle which results in a less noticeable scar and reduces the risk of post-surgical complications.

Additional features and benefits of the Zimmer Biomet Trabecular Metal™ Total Ankle include:

  • Durable, porous metal, making it conducive to bone-in-growth
  • Longevity of 10-20 years, compared to traditional ankle replacements lasting 8-10 years on average
  • Low-profile design, allowing the surgeon to retain more of your natural bone
  • Number of sizing options for optimal fit to your ankle’s anatomy

Approximately more than 6,000 of the Zimmer Biomet Trabecular Metal™ Total Ankle replacements have been used around the country since its debut. At Central Indiana Orthopedics and local hospitals, Dr. Herbst has performed over 250 ankle replacements using this implant. He is one of the top two users in the U.S. and top three users of this implant in the world.
