Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Ryan Cieply Celebrates Five Years at Central Indiana Orthopedics

This month, Dr. Ryan Cieply is celebrating five years at Central Indiana Orthopedics! As a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Cieply specializes in conditions of the hip and knee, primarily arthritis, with joint replacement and revision surgery representing most of his practice.

Dr. Cieply came to CIO from Kentucky, where he started his career in orthopedics at Baptist Health Lexington. After completing medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and residency at University of Kentucky, he chose to further his education and completed an adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Florida. This started the foundation of his expertise in treating complex conditions of the hip and knee, including revision replacement surgery for patients who have previously had a hip or knee replacement.

Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to staying current on innovative technologies and surgical approaches. During fellowship training, Dr. Cieply became trained and certified in Mako SmartRobotics™ robotic arm-assisted surgical technology for hip and knee replacement. Additionally, he is also an advocate for using muscle-sparing surgical techniques, such as direct anterior approach, in hip replacement surgery.

We asked Dr. Cieply what three words best describe him and how they relate to his approach to patient care. “The three words that best describe me are courteous, patient and diligent,” Dr. Cieply said. “For example, I always want to make sure patients get my best work. When I come away from a surgery, I want to know that I did the best job that I could – that the technical parts of the surgery and all the care that went in to the pre-operative time and post-operative time are all done to the best of my abilities.”

Dr. Cieply also believes in making sure his patients feel comfortable going into surgery, and guiding patients throughout the entire recovery process. “As an orthopedic surgeon, I perform surgery all the time, but for patients, surgery may be new to them,” Dr. Cieply explained. “After surgery, an important part of aftercare is guiding patients through the entire recovery process to give them the best results that we can. It’s a time-consuming process, but it’s a big part of what I do. The goal is to get patients to do as well as possible.”

Something people may not know about Dr. Cieply is he likes rock and heavy metal music. In fact, he’s been known to listen to rock/heavy metal in the operating room to help him stay focused during surgery. Also, Dr. Cieply is married with four kids, so in his spare time (which isn’t much with four kids!) they enjoy spending time together as a family.
