Mako SmartRobotics™ is an innovative surgical tool that helps those suffering from painful arthritis of the knee or hip and enables patients to have a more predictable experience when undergoing a total or partial knee replacement, or total hip replacement. Before surgery, Mako uses a 3D CT-based planning software so the surgeon can know more about a patient’s anatomy to create a personalized joint replacement surgical plan. During surgery, Mako’s AccuStop™ technology guides the surgeon to cut precisely what is planned to help preserve tissue and save healthy bone. Together, this allows for the following patient benefits:
While other orthopedic practices have adopted Mako in recent years, Central Indiana Orthopedics was the first orthopedic practice in the region to utilize Mako SmartRobotics, installing our first robot in 2016 at one of CIO’s outpatient surgery centers. Since then, we’ve expanded the number of Mako robots we own and have access to, continuing to lead the way in providing state-of-the-art and personalized care to our patients. To date, we’ve helped over 3,000 patients get back to doing what they love with Mako robotic-arm assisted surgeries.

We take patient care very seriously, which is why we have a dedicated Nurse Practitioner Patient Navigator, Natalie McClintick, readily available to assist our hip and knee replacement patients and ensure they receive the best possible post-surgical care. Patients undergoing hip or knee replacement at our Fishers or Muncie outpatient surgery centers will meet with Natalie for one-on-one joint education before surgery, helping them feel informed and comfortable going into the procedure. Patients having surgery at the hospital will receive joint education from a hospital representative.
Upon discharge from our surgery center or the hospital, all hip and knee replacement patients will receive a bracelet with Natalie’s name and contact information. It’s important to Natalie that our patients have “one person” to contact with any questions or concerns during their recovery. With this service, our patients have access to a Nurse Practitioner with over 25 years of orthopedic experience, available 24/7 for support. Learn more about Natalie’s unique role at Central Indiana Orthopedics in the video below.
Every patient is unique in their own recovery. Patient results can vary based on the patient’s health, the surgeon and technique used. Our surgeons discuss realistic recovery expectations with each patient prior to any surgery, as each patient is different.
Our surgeons can perform Mako-assisted hip or knee replacement surgery at Central Indiana Orthopedics Muncie Surgery Center, Central Indiana Orthopedics Fishers Surgery Center, Ascension St. Vincent Fishers Hospital or Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Hospital.
The following board-certified orthopedic surgeons are certified in Mako technology
No. The surgeon operates the robot while the robot guides the surgeon’s cuts. During surgery, the surgeon references a computer screen as a guide. The robot will not allow the surgeon to operate outside of the predetermined boundary.
CIO was the first orthopedic practice in the region to utilize Mako technology with our first robot installed in our Muncie outpatient surgery center in 2016 and two additional robots installed in our Fishers outpatient surgery center in 2019 and 2024. As the orthopedic surgeons of Ascension St. Vincent Anderson and Fishers hospitals, our surgeons use the robots they purchased in 2020 (Fishers) and 2021 (Anderson).
Patients will not see any additional charge for the Mako procedure, as it is charged the same as a traditional joint replacement.
