Expert Foot and Ankle Care: Podiatrist vs Orthopedic Surgeon

In a recent post, we announced the addition of Podiatry to our foot and ankle team, allowing us to broaden the services of expert foot and ankle care we deliver to our patients. You might be curious how a podiatrist and orthopedic foot and ankle specialist are different. Below, you’ll get to know Dr. DeWitt (podiatrist) and Dr. Herbst (orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon) and learn more about their practices.

Meet Dr. Matthew DeWitt, Board-Certified Podiatrist

Dr. Matthew DeWitt is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) and has specialized training to treat disorders of the foot and ankle. When entering medicine, he knew he wanted to specialize in an area that allowed him to help patients maintain their quality of life. He has always maintained an active lifestyle, so he understands the importance of being able to do the things you enjoy. From young athletes trying to stay in the game to patients trying to maintain their mobility and manage other underlying diseases, Dr. DeWitt has spent his career serving patients and helping them achieve overall wellness.

Common procedures and treatments include:

  • Neuroma/pinched nerve

Until his recent transition to Central Indiana Orthopedics, Dr. DeWitt had been in private practice since 2004 at DeWitt Foot & Ankle in Muncie. He continues to serve the Muncie community, but additionally practices in our Marion office.

Meet Dr. Steven Herbst, Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Steven Herbst, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeon. He has a passion for innovation, teaching and missions, and has co-designed and patented an ankle replacement implant. Dr. Herbst enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience teaching orthopedic courses nationally and internationally. His greatest joy comes from serving internationally in the missions field, taking annual trips to Central America with Operation Walk to perform complex lower extremity reconstructions.
