Meet Dr. Jamie Kay, board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in general orthopedics, joint replacement and sports medicine. Dr. Kay practices in our Anderson and Fishers offices and is the current President of Central Indiana Orthopedics. He’s been practicing at CIO since 2001.
Dr. Kay’s exposure to medicine came from his dad who was a family doctor in the small town of Huntington, Indiana. “I think his patients really loved him, and I wanted to be like that,” Dr. Kay said. “I always knew I wanted to be a doctor.” Following in his dad’s footsteps, Dr. Kay pursued a career in medicine and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, with his Doctor of Medicine degree. After medical school, he completed an internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at Indiana University Health Center in Indianapolis.
Dr. Kay chose orthopedics because he enjoys solving problems and using his hands. “When a patient comes in and they are hurt, I like being able to fix what’s bothering them,” Dr. Kay said. “Often in orthopedics you can see immediate changes, and I really enjoy watching the patient recover. There’s nothing better than a happy patient.”
Similar to how his dad ran a medical practice, Dr. Kay believes in the same “small town” values and building a relationship with his patients. “What a patient can expect from me is that I’m going to treat them like my family,” Dr. Kay said. “There are a lot of grey areas in orthopedics as far as how aggressive or conservative treatment should be. Sometimes the answer is surgery, but a lot of times it’s not surgery. I’m going to talk to the patient, give them options, and we decide together.”
While Dr. Kay never talks anyone into surgery, he’s passionate about having the most advanced technology at his fingertips for when surgery is an option. “At Central Indiana Orthopedics, we are heavily involved in robotics,” Dr. Kay said. “We feel the Mako SmartRobotics™ technology for hip and knee replacement allows our patients to have better outcomes.” Mako technology is a unique surgical solution for those suffering from painful arthritis of the hip or knee and enables patients to have a more predictable experience when undergoing joint replacement surgery.
Interestingly, Dr. Kay has had two Mako robotic total knee replacements – one knee in 2018 and the other knee in 2022, both as outpatient procedures at CIO surgery centers. (Read more about Dr. Kay’s personal experience after his first knee replacement.) “I’m able to tell patients what joint replacement surgery is like because I know, and when they ask what implant I’m putting in them, I tell them the same one I have,” Dr. Kay said. “It’s a unique bond that I have with my patients.”
We asked Dr. Kay if his approach to patient care has changed over the last 21 years he’s been in practice. “I believe experience is invaluable. I’m always reading, always learning, going to conferences and trying to be better,” Dr. Kay shared. “Over the years, I’ve honed my practice down to joint replacement, which I really enjoy. I like what I do more all the time.”
When Dr. Kay isn’t practicing, he enjoys reading, watching sports, walking his dog and spending time with family. Watch Dr. Kay’s video interview below, or learn more at ciocenter.com/physicians/p-jamieson-kay-md/. To make an appointment, call 800-622-6575.
