Meet Dr. Li Chen, board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Central Indiana Orthopedics Fishers and Anderson offices. Dr. Chen specializes in injuries and arthritis of the hand, wrist and elbow. He also obtained a certificate of added qualification for hand surgery and is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).
Dr. Chen grew up in China and became interested in medicine in high school. “I always remember reading medical books about anatomy, and I’ve always loved science,” Dr. Chen said. “I chose to pursue orthopedic surgery because it’s one of the fields where you can fix a lot of the conditions. If you have a broken bone, we can fix it and you will heal. That really attracted me to orthopedics.”
Dr. Chen came to the United States after completing high school in China, and since then has been all over the country. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. After medical school, he completed an internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He then chose to further specialize in hand and upper-extremity surgery by undergoing fellowship training at Loma Linda University Medical Center at Loma Linda, California. After school, Dr. Chen eventually landed where his family was located.
We asked Dr. Chen about his approach to patient care; efficiency was top of mind. “In my clinic, we strive to get patients seen in a timely fashion,” said Dr. Chen. “I think everybody’s time is important, and I don’t like to keep my patients waiting, especially when they are in pain.”
Dr. Chen loves working with his hands and being part of the process to help patients return to their favorite activities. “In the operating room, I love when you’re able to piece together a broken bone and make it come together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle,” said Dr. Chen. “In clinic when I’m able to see patients, especially kids, come in with an injury and in pain, and then a few months later they are healed, happy and able to return to their favorite sport, that’s what I love most.”
When Dr. Chen isn’t seeing patients, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling and reading. Learn more about Dr. Chen and his approach to patient care in the video below. To schedule an appointment, call 800-622-6575, or request an appointment online.
