For Christy Gray, staying active has always been a source of joy. At 75, the retired dental hygienist enjoys traveling with her husband, reading, walking and playing pickleball. But in late 2023, knee pain began to interrupt the life she loved.
“I started having knee pain in late 2023,” Christy shared. “After a few cortisone shots, my knee was replaced by another surgeon in June 2024. Recovery was slow but seemed to be improving for a while.”
But soon after, something felt wrong.
After a few months, Christy began experiencing swelling, pain and increasing difficulty walking. When she returned to her original surgeon, she left feeling unheard.
“He said the swelling was not unusual and to call him in a year if I was still experiencing pain,” she said. “He didn’t take an X-ray or conduct any other tests. I just knew something wasn’t right.”
Unable to enjoy her normal activities, Christy knew she needed answers. Christy’s husband had undergone a successful total shoulder replacement at Central Indiana Orthopedics (CIO) in June 2025. Impressed by the experience, he encouraged Christy to seek help there as well. His surgeon ultimately referred Christy to Dr. John Martin, a moment she now looks back on with gratitude.
“Dr. Martin took several X-rays, withdrew fluid buildup to check for infection, and recommended a bone scan,” Christy said. “He was very thorough in his diagnosis.” The results revealed what her instincts had already been telling her: Christy’s knee implant had come loose. The only solution was a revision knee surgery
But instead of fear at the prospect of a second surgery, Christy felt relief. “Dr. Martin couldn’t have been more professional. He was personable, thorough, knowledgeable, patient and explained what had happened. I felt complete confidence in him taking care of me.”
Christy underwent her knee revision surgery in October 2025 – an experience she describes as completely different from her first. “My knee felt better right away after the surgery,” she said. “I could feel the difference.”
With dedication and consistency, Christy committed herself to her rehabilitation. “I followed directions and was diligent in my physical therapy. After three months of rehabilitation, I’m back to doing everything I want to do,” Christy said. “I know it takes about a year to completely heal, but I feel I am well on my way!”
Christy says the CIO staff and nurses made all the difference. “They couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful, always answering my questions. I’m so glad I went to CIO, and I just wish I had known about Dr. Martin the first time around.”
Today, Christy is back to walking comfortably, riding her bike, playing pickleball and enjoying travel with her husband. Most importantly, she’s enjoying life without knee pain.
“I did not look forward to going through another surgery, but I trusted Dr. Martin to take great care of me, and he did,” she said. “I would heartily recommend Dr. Martin to anyone who has knee issues. I’m so thankful for his expertise and thoroughness. In my opinion, he is one of the best.”
Christy’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to your body, trusting your instincts and finding a care team committed to truly understanding your needs. Her story shows that with the right diagnosis, expert surgical care and a dedicated recovery plan, it’s possible to return to pain-free movement and to the life you love.
