Shoulder replacement surgery is evolving — and Dr. Brian Badman is leading the way right here at Central Indiana Orthopedics. A board-certified, fellowship-trained shoulder surgeon, Dr. Badman recently became the first surgeon in Indiana to perform a shoulder replacement using the ARVIS® Shoulder system, a new technology that brings augmented reality directly into the operating room. This first-of-its-kind procedure was performed on July 28, 2025, at Central Indiana Orthopedics outpatient surgery center in Fishers.
What Is ARVIS®?
ARVIS® stands for Augmented Reality Visual and Information System – a wearable headset that allows your surgeon to access real-time, visual surgical guidance without needing extra screens or bulky equipment. Instead of looking away from the surgical site to view information on a monitor, Dr. Badman sees surgical guidance directly through the ARVIS eyepiece, projected right over the shoulder he’s working on. This helps him stay focused on the patient — not a screen across the room — and make highly accurate adjustments in real time during surgery.
Unlike traditional surgical navigation systems that require pre-operative CT scans, ARVIS uses the patient’s natural anatomy as a guide and doesn’t require any additional imaging or planning ahead of time.
“With ARVIS, I’m able to make precise, real-time decisions during shoulder replacement based on each patient’s unique anatomy,” says Dr. Badman. “It’s a smarter way to do surgery that helps me stay completely focused on the patient.”
What This Means for Our Patients
Patients considering shoulder replacement may benefit from the ARVIS® system in several important ways:
- Personalized, Precise Surgery: ARVIS helps the surgeon align and position the implant more accurately, based on the patient’s unique anatomy.
- Focused, Streamlined Surgery: Because ARVIS is hands-free and self-contained, the surgeon can stay fully focused on the procedure — without distractions or unnecessary equipment in the room.
- Streamlined Operating Room: Minimal setup and equipment clutter result in a cleaner, more efficient surgical environment.
While every patient’s outcome is unique, ARVIS is designed to support safe, consistent procedures that align with a surgeon’s goals for long-term joint function and comfort.
Central Indiana Orthopedics has long been at the forefront of orthopedic innovation, including early adoption of Mako SmartRobotics™ technology for hip and knee replacement. Dr. Badman’s use of ARVIS® for shoulder replacement further advances our commitment to delivering leading-edge, personalized orthopedic care. By integrating the latest surgical technologies, we continue to help patients across Central Indiana return to the activities they love — with care that’s precise, innovative and tailored to them.
